I Love Oregon Wine Blog
06/25/2005 - Grape Names & People Names
|
There is nothing more flattering to me than being called by name when it is unexpected. Now that I'm a merchant, I try to call customers by name, and when I can, I introduce customers to each other in my shop. When the names escape me, I offer up tidbits of interesting information and hope the people will throw in the names themselves. Thank goodness they do. While I may forget names, I do often remember particular tastes in wine. So when people walk through the door, what often plays in my head is "syrah," "sauvignon blanc" and "cabernet" instead of Renee, Don, or Kendall. I remember what a customer bought last time, and try to recommend something new they might want to try. I love that feature on amazon.com where if you buy a book, a list of other books comes up that you might also like to try. I love the descriptions customers give of wine. Of a particular Pinot Blanc, one description was "this is good sipping-in-the-bathtub wine." Speaking of Kendall, he comes in periodically to buy a "haircut wine." He has a friend who gives him a haircut and they always try a new wine on that evening. Kendall, report back on the Barbera d'Alba!
